I wasn’t quite sure what that meant when I walked into the giant warehouse either but turns it is probably one of the coolest things you will ever see. I’ve always been a really big fan of The Crucible, which is this organization here in the Bay Area that does classes and workshops in machine shop, glass blowing, enameling, fire performance, blacksmithing…you name it. But they also puts on amazing art shows and festivals, and, yup, fire operas. I had been to a couple of their fire arts operas but never a show and man, was this incredible.
The only way I can describe it is vaudeville meets classical opera meets steampunk meets giant balls of fire everywhere at random moments.
This is a video from a rehearsal a few weeks back. It’s short but it gives you a pretty good idea of the caliber of this thing. Totally check them out if you are here.
Also, they were serving Lagunitas. Big plus. Awesome evening, all around.
